Summer is here and has opened up more possibilities when it comes to exercising and staying fit. There's enough great weather to make going to the beach a viable option, for example.

Make the most of the brilliant sunshine while it lasts and spruce up your fitness regime with some of these unconventional exercises.

Stand-up paddle-boarding

With summer comes perfect beach weather, giving you a great opportunity to take to the sea and surf yourself fit. But for a fun way to get an intensive workout without relying on the waves, stand-up paddle-boarding is one to try.

Instead of waiting until a wave comes, you stand on an oversized board and propel yourself through the water with the aid of a large paddle, similar to a gondolier.

Fitness scavenger hunt

Summer is the perfect time to get back into jogging, and a great way to make your exercise regime more fun is to turn it into a game.

Make a note of the landmarks that appear throughout your hometown or village, such as statues or specific shops, and attribute those landmarks to a particular exercise. For instance, you may decide that if you pass a statue while jogging, you must perform 10 push-ups.

Draw up a list of as many different landmarks and exercises as you want to liven up your routine jogging.

Speedminton

A hybrid sport that borrows elements of tennis, badminton and racquetball, this minimalistic sport is great fun with friends and easy for anyone to get into.

The rules are simple: hit the shuttlecock back and forth, and if you don't hit the shuttlecock your opponent gets a point.

All you need are some racquets, a shuttlecock and some chalk to draw out a court - no net required. What makes this sport so great is that it can be played virtually anywhere.

Fitness getaway

Combine fitness with a holiday by going away for the summer to a fitness retreat. These getaways are specially designed to cater to all types of fitness lovers, from people interested in losing a few pounds to serious fitness buffs.

Once you're there,  you can relax in tropical weather and take part in a wide variety of fun activities and eat delicious and nutritious meals.

For your time off from work or university, treat yourself to a weight loss holiday in Spain or Portugal for fun in the sun while you build some muscle.

Hula-hooping

Exercise and fitness are most effective when they're fun. The humble hula-hoop is far more than just a child's toy. Hula-hooping is a great workout for building cardio and slimming down the waist and thighs.

You can add to the fun by getting your friends involved and having a hula-hoop group session at the local park or beach.

On top of this, hula-hooping also helps you to develop a stronger and more flexible spine. Plus, it's safe to do indoors if the summer weather takes a turn for the worse.

These are just a handful of the wonderful ways you can bring life to an exercise regime this summer. When keeping fit starts to become dull is when many people consider giving up. Do whatever you can to keep things fun so that you can keep motivated and stay fit.
